TSE IntelliCage

Automated group housing with individual-level data collection

IntelliCage is a fully automated home-cage phenotyping platform that enables continuous assessment of behavior and cognition in socially housed rodents (up to 16 mice per cage). Animals are individually identified (e.g., via RFID) and interact with programmable operant corners, allowing measurement of learning, memory, motivation, decision-making, circadian activity, and social context effects—all within a standardized, enriched home-cage environment.

By minimizing experimenter contact and routine handling, IntelliCage reduces stress-related confounds, improves internal validity, and enhances reproducibility. The system logs outcomes at the individual level (e.g., trial counts, latencies, error rates, visit structure, lick patterns), supports longitudinal designs, and facilitates compliance with the 3Rs by extracting rich datasets from group-housed animals.

Controlled access to peripherals.
For experiments requiring movement between the IntelliCage and external devices (e.g., running wheels, calorimetry/metabolic cages), the animal gate provides precise, automated transit control. Access can be conditioned on individual ID, time-of-day windows, task performance criteria, or custom schedules. All entries/exits are recorded, enabling reproducible protocols, streamlined workflows, and reduced animal stress compared with manual transfers.
