The CFCG was founded in March 2011, when new sequencing technologies became available and several research groups were in need of different sequencing services.

At the present time, the CFCG has two SOLiD 5500W System platforms, one Ion Torrent PGM platform, one OpenArray AccuFill System, one 7900HT Fast Real-Time PCR System and all the necessary equipment related to these platforms. Additionally, the CFCG has PreCellys 24 System with Cryolys and FastPrep 24 System for tissue homogenizing. For data analysis, two cluster computer systems can be used (located at the Biomedicum, University of Tartu and at the  High Performance Computing Centre, University of Tartu).
